Yes, that’s a good way to look at it. Despite Nance’s defense and constant energy, some of us have lamented on his scoring shortcomings. We can use the pick to pick a player who’s more 3 and D. What I’m sad most is to see the great positive energy that he is as a person, now in Cleveland.

They had to attach Nance and his salary to trade Clarkson and get the first round pick in return. This was an excellent trade by any standard.

I just love lurking on the Boston Celtics blog when they lose a game to the Lakers. Oh, the angst. But they also have very savvy fans who appreciate the history of the rivalry and recognize that our young team played well last night. Whatever we do, do not trade Randle to the Celtics who really like him as a player.

Julius would be great on Celtics but Smart would also be great on Lakers. The reality is both would be better fits on the other’s team. Overall, I thought the Lakers’ young stars looked better than the Celtics’ young players. We won despite free throws and missing Lonzo.

We keep hearing what a great roster the Celtics have but I think they’re overrated and are falling back to earth. IT was probably a better fit than Kyrie, who can’t do it all alone without LeBron. Kuzma > Tatum, Ingram > Brown. Celtics need Haywood to move to the next level.

Totally agree, we already have Lonzo. Smart doubles-down on the ‘can do everything but shoot’ skill set we have in both KCP and Ball.

With his defense, he would be a great backup point guard,
Backup point guard is important as a 6th man in today’s NBA.
Lakers need backup point guard more than third power forward.

But I too would love to keep Randle. He is a unicorn in his own way.

            • LakerTom (Publisher) 12:36 PM on January 24, 2018 Permalink

The only reason to NOT trade for PG at the deadline would be if you wanted to keep all the kids and just sign PG as your one max contract free agent. Frankly, I could support that option or one where Cousins was the one max contract. Just don’t think Magic and Rob would but maybe we can keep this streak going and change their minds.

Jamie Sweet (Local Ne'er-Do-Well) 12:36 PM on January 24, 2018 Permalink

Maybe. I think he’s all in on the Celtics and they seem all in on him. Randle does make sense, for them, he makes a lot sense for us. We already have KCP, Ennis, Caruso and Clarkson. Unless there’s something major going on with that knee I think we have enough guards who can’t shoot. His defense is better than all of theirs, except maybe KCP, but that’s where it ends.

That is exactly the path I hope the team treads. Swap Cousins for George, though, and roll with Ingram improving.

This could just be me, but I need to say it. I really feel like this website has lost its focus. I come here everyday to read about Lakers but if not for the Lakerholics logo at the top, I could be at Yahoo website or something.

There are so many postings about other teams and players I don’t particularly care about. I come here specifically to read about the Lakers, if I wanted sports news in general I’d go to BSPN or Sports Illustrated. I’d rather have a few good articles/analysis about the Lakers than have to scroll through a bunch of mildly interesting things about other teams.

Then there’s the out of the blue postings like basement farming and others that I don’t see as being related at all to the core focus of this site. No offense to you Sean, I appreciate the effort you put into the site, truly I do. But could we focus more on Lakers related stuff? With so many tangential postings, really good stuff are quickly buried and you miss them because they’ve gone into older postings.

I have to agree, Seely. Thanks for your post. I guess I’m going to have to delete all non-Lakers posts going forward. I don’t mind an occasional post and I did make one about the Yankees but the Lakers posts were buried with an avalanche of non-Lakers posts.

Going forward, let’s limit all posts to the Lakers and subjects that invite good discussions. Fewer posts and more comments should be our goal as a community. I will also start limiting the posts I make to one per subject so as to concentrate the comments.

    Hi everyone,

Just to let you know my town, Tallahassee, survived Irma without too much damage. We were so worried that Irma was gonna hit us as a Category 1 hurricane. But Irma shifted to the right and we were spared a more devastating hit. My husband and I hunkered down at a friend’s place and their electricity and internet did not go out. My own neighborhood had power outage this morning but power was restored by late afternoon. So we’re back in our home and thankful that the damage was not as bad as first anticipated. Thanks for your prayers and best wishes y’all. Someone up there was listening.

Even then, there’s no running away from that storm since it’s so huge but at least we’ll end up with a much weaker version.

Dear guys (or any other lurking Laker ladies), I’m back in the US and staying put here. I returned to Singapore last November. Unfortunately hubby ran into visa issues so returning home to Singapore for good is a no-go. Broke my parents’ hearts to see their daughter leave again. Not to mention my little nephews and nieces in tears to see me go.

But such is life, we can’t always have what we want. Perhaps the powers that be has other plans for me. Anyway, I’m back in Tallahassee with hubby and my cat, Paris Hilton. So this Laker girl is back in the enemy territory of Florida and flying the Laker nation flag proudly.

A good thing that comes from all this is the fact that I can watch live Laker games again. When I was in Singapore, the time difference means most games will be played during my office hours.

Anyway, it’s also good to be back in my other home town of Tallahassee. I’ve missed a lot of things here and also my friends.

But no matter how far I go, or where I live…… Lakers will always be close to my heart. Long live Lakers!!!!!!!

For the record, I really HATE this trade. I think it’s a mistake to trade Russell away. In a couple of years when he’s really good, we are so gonna regret this. We trade away our #2 pick only 2 years into his time in the NBA when he was one of our only bright spots last season. Surely there are other ways to get rid of Mozgov’s contract? Even if it’s to clear cap space for LeBron or whoever, does this have to be done now?

I wouldn’t call it a stupid move and I’m one of the DLo fans in here. 1) Mozgov is off the books; 2) Lopez’s contract expires next summer, but we own his Bird rights (he’s only 29); 3) MAJOR upgrade at center; Lopez has 3 point range now and he’s been one of the more gifted offensive centers in the league for years and decent rim protector. He’s a more consistent and reliable scorer than Russell (so far); 3) We added another late first that could possibly be used to trade for PG or packaged with #28 to move up; 4) If we draft Lonzo, he will be a better facilitator than Russell, who seemed confused out there a lot looking for teammates to pass the ball to.

At the end of the day, we’re still young, Ball (or whomever at #2) replaces Russell, we upgrade significantly at center as Zubac ripens, and of course we open up cap space. Stupid? No. Perplexing to many fans? Understandable for those who believe Russell will be a perennial all-star.

I would call it a fair trade that helps both teams. Call me silly, but I’m a Brook Lopez fan and I’m thrilled he’s coming here. Great character guy and a potentially great trade deadline trade chip if that’s the direction they choose.

I’m in the same boat. I will really miss D’Angelo. It’s sad that Jim Buss made that midnight call to “secure” Mozgov in probably the dumbest contract since Jon Konkak.

I remember how happy Jim was to get D’Angelo at the #2 pick. Magic is sticking it to Jim now.

But the move does make sense from a business, leadership, and salary flexibility standpoint as stated by you Keen. Plus, Brook Lopez is a good player when healthy. I will always be a D’Angelo Russell fan though, I just like his game and smooth style on the court.

        Anyways,
        Go Magic!
        Go Lakers!

From my perspective of wanting to build a TEAM of young players and let them develop, it was a stupid move. If you are a fan of signing costly free agents, some of which are past their prime or will certainly lose their athletic edge, then maybe it can be considered differently.

I’m mostly sad that he could have been used an asset to land a much better haul had those awful deals never been signed. Instead, he’s just a sweetener in a salary dump.

In any case, I can’t think of anyone a team gave up on early that developed into anything but a perennial journeyman. You could maybe bring up Millsap, but he was always trending upward and Utah, as Utah does, was just too cheap to keep him. Even so they kept him through his rookie deal and extension.

Don’t you think they did their due diligence? Fans always think they know better. That salary dump happens to be huge. What you don’t understand is that we still have assets to trade, unlike the last time around when all we had was cap space.

I never said it was a bad trade -- in fact given the circumstances, a pretty good one. And I’m plenty aware the team still has SOME assets -- ones that’ll likely be depleted in a PG trade. While I wasn’t in love with DLo’s game, particularly on D, he was a capable shooter in the right situation. But mostly, the cost controlled depth that allowed the Warriors to build just got thrown out the window. The vision for the future looks like 3 superstars taking up the entirety of the cap, Lonzo Ball hopefully blossoming, and a bunch of minimums and ring chasers. I’ll take it, but if the W’s stay healthy, I don’t know if that surpasses them.

With regards to due diligence, I don’t think the previous regime did any when it came to the Moz/Deng signings.

I’m just happy the Lakers are starting to look relevant again.

It was never about this year, we are gambling that we match GS with 3 Superstars-Stars next season. I was for holding our kids and see what we might get for free, but we are going in a faster direction, we all hope it’s the right direction and Magic can pull off magic again for us Lakers!

That’s what I’m worried about too. Not growing in depth naturally through good draft picks. Almost feel like the awful tanking we went through are almost all for naught if we’re gonna fall into the same situation again. Top heavy talent surrounded blah talent.

Yes, piss poor front office moves wiped out one tanking season. All those 2014-15 losses pretty much went out the windows because of a pair of totally avoidable moves.

If they keep Ingram, #2 (Lonzo hopefully) and Zubac, plus Nance and either Clarkson or Randle (preferably Julius), that is a nice core of young draft picks. The Warriors have Steph, Klay and Draymond as the core they built around. The Celtics are doing a good job of it, too, and the Spurs are magical. I don’t think you need to load up with 5 or more youngsters, but I do hope they are right about the ones they do choose to stick with. Obviously, many Lakers fans feel DLo has the highest ceiling. I think that he has a very high ceiling, but from what I have seen of Lonzo Ball, I believe he’s a more natural NBA player. I think Julius will be an absolute beast by the time he’s 25, so I hope he stays. I love Zubac, too, the wildcard in all this, and I think everyone agrees that Ingram can be special. This ain’t an easy business.

I think some combo of 2 of Randle/Clarkson/Nance and the late 1st’s are going to be headed to Indy. If Zubac is the stumbling block, he may have to be included too, especially if they’d take back Deng. We could absorb Al Jeff’s expiring deal.

I wish I could share your optimism on Randle, but I really don’t think he’ll be worth the 15mil/yr or so he’ll be looking for in free agency. That contract year physique speaks volumes.

The 2 and BI are off the table, obviously.

Reports are that the Lakers tried to move DAR for a lottery pick…no takers. They got the best value they could outta him. Fans like to talk about our valuable “assets” but outside of BI the rest of the league doesn’t view them the same way.

Definitely inclined to agree, MS … I think alotta Ls fans overvalued D’Lo’s worth to the rest of the league.

I mean..folks were talking about trading him to SAC for their TWO lottery picks. Couldn’t even draw ONE.

Yes he was eye candy for me!!! Kidding, I really do like Dar although I was initially in the Okafor camp. But Dar won me over and I feel he should be given more time to develop. I also wanted to see how he and Lonzo would play together. Guess we’ll never know now.

I didnt like the trade either. I thought it was premature. They don’t need the space this year. And never would trade a 21 year old who has shown promise after just 2 seasons. That said I hope they don’t compound the mistake by trading Randle. With Lopez on board he will have more room in the paint then he has ever had. If he develops a 3 point shot he could really be special.

I think folks gotta at least entertain the notion that Earv/Rob/Luke just didn’t want this dude around the team anymore and it had very little to do with his on-court ability.

I’d trade Julius, too, unless he’s somehow, along with that new chiseled frame, developed a consistent perimeter shot in the last coupla months. But that’s just me, I guess.

They might as well trade him now because it seems like they aren’t gonna be able to pay him next summer anyway if they’re hunting max-level free agents…

Turned in my resignation today. I will be returning home to the United States in early August. Yay, I can watch live games again, but there will be no more games till October. Anyone got a job offer for me? Preference will be for something in the Laker’s front office….. hey, a girl can dream, right?
