For the record, I really HATE this trade. I think it’s a mistake to trade Russell away. In a couple of years when he’s really good, we are so gonna regret this. We trade away our #2 pick only 2 years into his time in the NBA when he was one of our only bright spots last season. Surely there are other ways to get rid of Mozgov’s contract? Even if it’s to clear cap space for LeBron or whoever, does this have to be done now?

I wouldn’t call it a stupid move and I’m one of the DLo fans in here. 1) Mozgov is off the books; 2) Lopez’s contract expires next summer, but we own his Bird rights (he’s only 29); 3) MAJOR upgrade at center; Lopez has 3 point range now and he’s been one of the more gifted offensive centers in the league for years and decent rim protector. He’s a more consistent and reliable scorer than Russell (so far); 3) We added another late first that could possibly be used to trade for PG or packaged with #28 to move up; 4) If we draft Lonzo, he will be a better facilitator than Russell, who seemed confused out there a lot looking for teammates to pass the ball to.

At the end of the day, we’re still young, Ball (or whomever at #2) replaces Russell, we upgrade significantly at center as Zubac ripens, and of course we open up cap space. Stupid? No. Perplexing to many fans? Understandable for those who believe Russell will be a perennial all-star.

I would call it a fair trade that helps both teams. Call me silly, but I’m a Brook Lopez fan and I’m thrilled he’s coming here. Great character guy and a potentially great trade deadline trade chip if that’s the direction they choose.

i do agree with Keen..he has pin pointed every aspect of that trade..I would also agree that it is hard to see DLo traded as a salary dump but it was a very helpful trade moving forward..hopefully we can convert Lopez into an asset next year

I’m in the same boat. I will really miss D’Angelo. It’s sad that Jim Buss made that midnight call to “secure” Mozgov in probably the dumbest contract since Jon Konkak.

I remember how happy Jim was to get D’Angelo at the #2 pick. Magic is sticking it to Jim now.

But the move does make sense from a business, leadership, and salary flexibility standpoint as stated by you Keen. Plus, Brook Lopez is a good player when healthy. I will always be a D’Angelo Russell fan though, I just like his game and smooth style on the court.

        Anyways,
        Go Magic!
        Go Lakers!

From my perspective of wanting to build a TEAM of young players and let them develop, it was a stupid move. If you are a fan of signing costly free agents, some of which are past their prime or will certainly lose their athletic edge, then maybe it can be considered differently.

I’m mostly sad that he could have been used an asset to land a much better haul had those awful deals never been signed. Instead, he’s just a sweetener in a salary dump.

In any case, I can’t think of anyone a team gave up on early that developed into anything but a perennial journeyman. You could maybe bring up Millsap, but he was always trending upward and Utah, as Utah does, was just too cheap to keep him. Even so they kept him through his rookie deal and extension.

Don’t you think they did their due diligence? Fans always think they know better. That salary dump happens to be huge. What you don’t understand is that we still have assets to trade, unlike the last time around when all we had was cap space.

I never said it was a bad trade -- in fact given the circumstances, a pretty good one. And I’m plenty aware the team still has SOME assets -- ones that’ll likely be depleted in a PG trade. While I wasn’t in love with DLo’s game, particularly on D, he was a capable shooter in the right situation. But mostly, the cost controlled depth that allowed the Warriors to build just got thrown out the window. The vision for the future looks like 3 superstars taking up the entirety of the cap, Lonzo Ball hopefully blossoming, and a bunch of minimums and ring chasers. I’ll take it, but if the W’s stay healthy, I don’t know if that surpasses them.

With regards to due diligence, I don’t think the previous regime did any when it came to the Moz/Deng signings.

I’m just happy the Lakers are starting to look relevant again.

It was never about this year, we are gambling that we match GS with 3 Superstars-Stars next season. I was for holding our kids and see what we might get for free, but we are going in a faster direction, we all hope it’s the right direction and Magic can pull off magic again for us Lakers!

That’s what I’m worried about too. Not growing in depth naturally through good draft picks. Almost feel like the awful tanking we went through are almost all for naught if we’re gonna fall into the same situation again. Top heavy talent surrounded blah talent.

Yes, piss poor front office moves wiped out one tanking season. All those 2014-15 losses pretty much went out the windows because of a pair of totally avoidable moves.

If they keep Ingram, #2 (Lonzo hopefully) and Zubac, plus Nance and either Clarkson or Randle (preferably Julius), that is a nice core of young draft picks. The Warriors have Steph, Klay and Draymond as the core they built around. The Celtics are doing a good job of it, too, and the Spurs are magical. I don’t think you need to load up with 5 or more youngsters, but I do hope they are right about the ones they do choose to stick with. Obviously, many Lakers fans feel DLo has the highest ceiling. I think that he has a very high ceiling, but from what I have seen of Lonzo Ball, I believe he’s a more natural NBA player. I think Julius will be an absolute beast by the time he’s 25, so I hope he stays. I love Zubac, too, the wildcard in all this, and I think everyone agrees that Ingram can be special. This ain’t an easy business.

therealhtj 10:41 AM on June 21, 2017 Permalink

I think some combo of 2 of Randle/Clarkson/Nance and the late 1st’s are going to be headed to Indy. If Zubac is the stumbling block, he may have to be included too, especially if they’d take back Deng. We could absorb Al Jeff’s expiring deal.

I wish I could share your optimism on Randle, but I really don’t think he’ll be worth the 15mil/yr or so he’ll be looking for in free agency. That contract year physique speaks volumes.

The 2 and BI are off the table, obviously.

I didnt like the trade either. I thought it was premature. They don’t need the space this year. And never would trade a 21 year old who has shown promise after just 2 seasons. That said I hope they don’t compound the mistake by trading Randle. With Lopez on board he will have more room in the paint then he has ever had. If he develops a 3 point shot he could really be special.

Congrats. Was thinking of you when I saw the race, Seely. I also heard on the news a few days ago that he had the biggest monetary prize of any country since Singapore had never won a gold -- $750,000. Now that was a pretty dfamn good day for Joseph.

Yup, that’s SIN $1 million… it pays to be the first!!!! The Singapore government had in the past “imported” talent, as in offer athletes Singapore citizenship to represent Singapore. Never won anything. Finally one of our own got the job done. Go Joe!!!

Thanks, Phil. It’s tough being just a little red dot on a map lol. So we’re really happy to hear our national anthem “Majulah Singapura” played at the Olympics and to have the light shone briefly onto our little nook of the world.

The amazing parts are the after event comments by both Schooling and Phelps. Phelps was so gracious while Schooling deferential and humble. Such a great display of sportsmanship.

Thanks, Keen. Michael Phelps is so classy. He has inspired a whole generation of swimmers with his accomplishments and his character. I’m happy for Joe that he’s accomplished his dream. I can’t wait to see this young man go on to do more great things.

Looks like a lot of things went down while I was sleeping. Mozgov? Really? It’s like Brexit, I didn’t think it was gonna happen until it did. Still trying to fathom how he fits into Coach Walton’s schemes.

But I’m glad for JC. Dude deserves his new paycheck.

      Good Morning Seely,

Well, I had no clue that Mozgov was even in the ballpark. At least Brexit was one of the considerations (and don’t get me started on how awful that referendum decision was, especially since I’ve been in London since two days before the referendum…)

I’m also glad for JC. Who do you think is next up for the lake show?

Hope you are doing well! :-)

Hey Cali, glad to see you here again. Yes, I’m doing well. How are your studies? I hope you’re making great progress.

For days we were talking about Biz and Whiteside. Then Mozgov name started being mentioned yesterday as someone Lakers were talking to. To be honest the only thing I remember about him is he got dunked on by Blake Griffin and that monster dunk went viral hence the catch phase for anyone who’s a recipient of a monster dunk -- “He got Mosgov-ed”. So the name doesn’t inspire much confidence :)

Brexit….oh boy, where do I begin? That was such a mess and I thought only Americans do crazy things… I hope the Brits find a way out of it.

My guess is that the Biz camp politely told them to look elsewhere. Remember, B-Shaw coached him and Luke has seen him up close a lot during a couple of playoff series, most notably 2015. Chin up!

I am Keen. The reality is, until our young core is much further along, the big name guys will prefer teams with money (a lot of teams have the money now) and a non-losing record. So in perspective, getting Mozgov on board is not a terrible move.

You guys are my online family and I really wanna share my happy news with you. Over the years many of you have cheered me on and sent me your best wishes. Well today, I successfully defended my dissertation and will be graduating this December with a doctoral degree in Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies. So happy. I made sure I got all my work done in time so I won’t have it hanging over me as the Lakers’ new and exciting season begins.
