Sources: Pelicans Would Have Considered Anthony Davis Deal if Lakers Handled Negotiations ‘Quietly’

The Anthony Davis negotiations between New Orleans and Los Angeles was the NBA’s premier open secret prior to the trade deadline, with Lakers president Magic Johnson pressuring Pelicans GM Dell Demps to make a move. But the public nature of Johnson and Demps’ discussions reportedly dissuaded the Pelicans from completing any hypothetical trade.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix assessed New Orleans’ present situation on Thursday, adding a look behind the scenes in the Lakers’ pursuit of Davis.

“Handled quietly, and the Pelicans might have been more open to dealing with the Lakers, sources familiar with the situation told The Crossover,” Mannix wrote on Thursday morning. “But Davis’s attempt to bully his way to LA, coupled with internal questions about whether the Lakers, who are headlined by LeBron James, who is represented by Rich Paul, who also represents Davis, had a hand in all this only served to cement the Pelicans resistance to dealing with Los Angeles—for now, anyway.”

Perhaps the Lakers will take a different tact in their negotiations this summer as they battle the Celtics and potential mystery teams for Davis.

Los Angeles has plenty of questions to answer before the summer, too. The Lakers enter Thursday night 10th in the West at 28–29. New Orleans is 13th in the West at 25–33.

I don’t see where he’s “quoting a source”; just Mannix giving his opinion.
But a friend of mine brought this up last week during all the madness and I tend to agree with him. Had AD & Rich Paul went to Demps quietly with a trade request to the Lakers then negotiations coulda taken place in private and maybe this deal gets done. Once they went public and exploded the zietgeist and emotions & posturing began…the whole thing was doomed. Demps then had to attempt to save face by appearing not to bend over for the Big Bad Lakers. I look at how the Knicks dealt Porzingus without any pre-amble or buildup; just ripped off the bandaid. They took heat for a coupla days and now it’s over & done with. The AD thing turned into an unwieldy mess once it became gristle for public consumption.

Now…RP may have quietly come to Demps with the request first but that’s not the narrative being told.

The TEAM is really sad to watch..A lot of our guys are playing hurt or not currently playing because of injuries

There is a lot to fix with this team and very limited in time

Looking at other teams, they are ramping it up for the postseason..Their style of play is already showing playoff mode

I am still hopeful that LAL will still reach the playoffs and get it together after the All Star Break..if they reach the 7th seed, we will have a strong chance of making a push..but if we continue to be like this and make the playoffs with the 8th seed then we can say see you next season. There is no way we can stop GSW in the 1st Round.

If ever we continue playing like this even after the break and not make the playoffs then better rest LBJ and some of the guys that the team thinks are going to be useful for next season or for trade. Hope for the best that they can acquire another high caliber player from Free Agency..Maybe go for Kemba or Demarcus.

I myself don’t think that we need a HC change instead find an offensive coach that will be able to help Luke

Now Trade Deadline has ended and we let go of Zubac who really played well as of late and Beasley for Muscala and maybe Melo..Let’s hope for the best..Another early exit out of all the hype we had upon acquiring LBJ

The Injuries were also the issue but this team is deep the way you look at it..It just did not fit together..i hope Magic and Rob will “Live and Learn” on what happened in this Trade Deadline..make a thorough plan for the off-season and make a decision on what they really wanted on a TEAM moving forward

Even if we are a marginal Lottery team, there’s still a percentage chance we get in the Top 10.

Having a Lottery pick plus young kids to dangle, is better than nothing.

I’d keep LeBron on a minutes restriction (load management) and let the kids air out their grievances on the court.

If the youngsters wanna stay and NOT get traded best way to do so is to show that they are good enough to play with LBJ. I’m curious to see how they handle this.

Yes! Fox is the point guard the Lakers need more than Lonzo Ball.
He will become the best defensive point guard in the league.
And his speed and athleticism will be perfect for Luke’s offense.
Lakers need defense not offense from this draft and Fox is the answer.
I love Lonzo Ball and he would transform our offense.
But De’Aaron Fox will do the same for our defense.
Lakers need to build a championship team and defense is their main need.

            Could.

No one weighing 175 is gonna be a dominant defensive guard. The anatomical defencies prevent this right now

He’s just 19 year old, Sean, and has the same kind of wiry strength that Michael Cooper had. He has explosive hops and quickness and John Wall speed. Only question is his ability to shoot the ball from distance.

I like him, but he doesn’t measure to John Wall

            • LakerTom (Publisher) 4:53 PM on May 16, 2017 Permalink

No 19 year old kid is going to measure against a proven NBA All-Star but Fox has more potential defensively than John Wall, who gets beaten backdoor constantly.

Fox doesn’t have Wall’s bulk and muscle but he is one of those wiry strong players who make up for weight with other world hops, quickness, and athleticism. I see his upside as Michael Cooper defensively and John Wall offensively. At 19, he is still a kid. Imagine him at 23 or 24.

Fox won’t be in the superstar category like a Kobe or LeBron or Durant but he has a good chance to be as good or better than John Wall imo. Fast but a different style of player.

If we do win the #1 pick, I would also explore options to trade back depending on where the Lakers thought Fox might end up. It’s possible we can get another first rounder by trading back.

I would also see what we could get in trade for the #1 pick. Could we get Willie Cauley-Stein and the #7 and #10 picks from the Kings for the #1 pick? What about trading for Paul George of Jimmy Butler?

Lakers Rumors: L.A. ‘In The Mix’ For Moe Harkless

The Los Angeles Lakers moved quickly at the outset of free agency once it began as they reached an agreement with center Timofey Mozgov on a four-year deal and re-signed promising guard Jordan Clarkson for four years.

The Lakers surely aren’t done as the team still has holes to fill and must add depth and one name that has come up is Portland Trail Blazers forward Moe Harkless.

According to Mike Bresnahan of Time Warner Cable SportsNet, the Lakers are ‘in the mix’ for Harkless, but things will move slowly since he is a restricted free agent:

Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders notes, however, that the belief around the league is that Portland will match any reasonable offer for Harkless:

If this turns out to be the case, the Lakers would likely have to overpay or creatively construct a contract in order to try and get Portland not to match. Kyler also points out that Portland’s max contract offer to Chandler Parsons, if accepted, could change things about whether or not they would match a deal on Harkless.

One thing that seems apparent this offseason is that the Lakers realized that they weren’t in play for most of the big names and have quickly moved on to solid players who may not move the needle, but could improve the team. Mozgov fit that bill, and Harkless does as well.

Many may have been hoping for a big splash in free agency, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening. Instead, the Lakers will seemingly focus on role players and hope for significant development from the young players on the roster.
