Adding to LT’s thoughts from the post below …

The two extreme versions of explanations usually given for the kind of game that we saw last night are –

    1) See what happens when Kobe’s teammates make shots ? Kobe is ALWAYS a willing passer, so if things don’t work it is on the teammates

    2) Well, look what happens when Kobe decides to get his teammates involved. We play better team basketball and win games.

I think the reality, usually, is somewhere in between. Kobe is a great passer but he isn’t always in a frame of mind where he’d be likely to make the best play on each possession…that is a part of who he is as a player and the only way he knows how to be a great scorer..often not the most efficient approach but ,for the most part, the results have been GREAT…so one can’t knock Kobe too much…I don’t think he ever believes that he is hurting the team by doing what he does ( it is rare anyway..very rarely has Kobe lost us a game by himself ..on the other hand, the games he has won virtually by himself..well…there have been more than a few )..so…calling it “selfishness” might be a simplistic but signs of a “me first” attitude haven’t all been imaginary either….

Kobe does exert a disproportionate amount of influence on the floor but when he loses patience and decides, pretty much, to go it alone, the teammates have a lil something to do with it….sometimes it starts with Kobe…sometimes with the rest of ’em…the only thing that has remained unchanged for a while is that Kobe is the one who can keep others on a leash and decide when/how ( or whether ) to exercise patience with ’em….not the other way around….a consistent pattern of apparent “bad habits” ( lack of movement off the ball etc ) among his teammates indicates that Kobe IS a factor…likely not the dominant factor ‘cuz , like NC pointed out the other day, a ball dominating guard shouldn’t keep them from doing their job, but a significant factor nonetheless…

Now, for the current roster, Kobe’s approach, by itself, isn’t gonna make a world of difference to the results..( except that we might end up losing that pick lol ) …but, given the new reality of his body that Kobe himself has acknowledged, a changed mindset might make things a lil easier on Kobe and the game more fun for all of ’em….a smidgen more of this Kobe woulda served his earlier self well but then, Kobe is about as stubborn as they come…change that some have wanted to see for a while is now likely to happen ‘cuz, if he is to continue operating at a high level, there simply isn’t another option…

Well said, Amit. You are educated and intelligent and insightful although at times exasperating. LOL. It’s always more fun to focus on the extreme possibilities but like you pointed out, most things end up somewhere in the middle. And with Kobe, maybe game to game.

You can’t be a big time elite scorer night after night without being something of a ball hog. That’s just how it is. So we shouldn’t expect Kobe to suddenly change. But we might expect him to gradually change, which what I think is happening, most recently due to the physical breakdown and the team’s at times inspired play without Kobe. He won’t be pass first all the time but he also won’t be shoot first all the time either. He will work to find the right balance.

I think he will balance his scoring and facilitating based on how the team is doing and he is defended. I also think doing that will make his teammates better. That’s why Kobe 2015 will be a new and improved version of Kobe. The rest of the year will be working to fully recover from his injuries and to work on his new court persona in hopes of the Lakers competing next year.

I gotta ask ya something, Tate. Why do you feel the need to negate just about everything positive that is said about Pau ? I remember you feeling bad about that yourself and then posting a video of one of his better plays against Garnett. Did this video seem like a provocation ? That wasn’t my intent. Just shared it ‘cuz it was posted on NBA’s official youtube channel upon Pau’s departure.

Because I have Asian family members, and, this act of denigration hit home with me, and my family. That’s not the kind of public behavior I would expect from a “class act”. I just shared the video because it reflects aspects of his character many don’t even know exists and was an international network news broadcast.

I didn’t “negate” anything. Pau brought that upon himself by participating in such a despicable demonstration of racism.

What’s much worse than racism? Infidelity is limited in the scope of it’s damage. ‘m sure much worse can be said about all of us. It’s just when you’re being touted as “all things wholesome and good” as some seem to do regarding Pau, rebuttal is within fthe scope of fair play. Besides, it was an international incident that drew international discredit to a Laker player.

No, Amit, you didn’t incite anything from me. No provocation, whatsoever. I just shared what I did because CNN felt it was worthy of dissemination and reflected a theretofore unknown aspect of Pau’s character.

He also did the unspeakable, turned down more money from the Lakers to play for another team. That makes him the enemy and fair game.

Btw -- I caught your edit.

You didn’t “intend” to negate anything. I will take your word for that. But the stark contrast between the original post and the response is hard to miss. That is what I meant.

              tate793 3:01 PM on July 20, 2014 Permalink

My word, Amit, is that I didn’t negate anything. While it is certain that the actions of everyone involved in the team photograph negated much of the positive things they might have accomplished, my statement simply reflects the fact that it was not me, personally, that brought about that negation. They [Pau] brought it upon themselves.

I gotcha, Tate. I asked ‘cuz of an earlier response from you which said you won’t refrain from responding when provoked on this subject.

As for your post , the reason why the act itself merits harsh criticism is rather obvious. I am not contesting that. Nor am I saying that you are being unfair to him. I just wasn’t sure why you posted it in response to a “Top 10 plays” video.

I think this tanking thing is being way overblown.
There’s a difference between intentionally building a team to lose games and just having a bad team. Everybody’s talking about it this year because the draft is so deep…and that only happens once every decade or so. Nobody was “tanking” to get Anthony Bennett or any of those dudes in last year’s draft….but you still saw a buncha bad teams losing a ton of games. Last team I recall that appeared to be actually trying to lose was the Celts when Durant & Oden were in the draft. Didn’t work out too well for them; they had the 2nd worst record and ended up with the #5 pick.

He wants his own team, at least that’s what he thinks he wants. If he goes to Houston, everyone’ll know it’s Harden’s squad. The only way that works out is if Harden plays Magic to Dwight’s Kareem. Publicly they’ll declare “This is Dwight’s team,” but privately everyone’ll know the team only goes as far as Harden takes them.
